Officers of SEIU Local 2 BGPWU
J. Cameron Nelson, President
Cam learned the lessons of solidarity early in life when he was fired from a summer job as a pin setter in a bowling alley at the age of 13 after organizing a work slowdown in support of higher wages.
A scholarship student at the University of Toronto, Cam followed his undergraduate degree with an LLB from Osgood Hall Law School in 1976. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1978.
Cam has worked full time for this Union for more than 32 years. He started as a National Representative for the Canadian Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal and Distillery Workers in 1974. In 1977, he was elected Business Agent of Local 304. During his tenure as Business Agent and President, the Union has quadrupled in size. Cam sat on the National Executive Board of NUPGE for more than 20 years and during that time acted as counsel to NUPGE on Charter of Rights and Freedom issues, arguing cases on NUPGE’s behalf at the Court of Appeal and in the Supreme Court of Canada.
He currently is a member of the Steering Committee of the SEIU Building Division and was recently elected as a member of the Board of Auditors of the International Union. He has written numerous articles for internal union publications, as well as having published in the Osgoode Hall Law Journal.
He continues to believe passionately in the importance of the work of the Union and after more than 30 years, still enjoys it.
