Brantford Charity Casino
Brantford – Feb. 15, 2008 – After a nine month legal battle, employees of the Brantford Charity Casino who work as Table Games Supervisors have won the right to unionize.
The group of sixty casino employees voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) last April. However their employer, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), challenged that vote at the Ontario Labour Relations Board arguing that the employees were in fact managers and therefore ineligible to unionize.
A settlement reached yesterday affirmed the casino employee’s long standing contention that they did not perform the type of job duties which would result in them being denied the right to form a union.
“This is a great victory for us. I think that table games supervisors across the province will look at what we have done here and take steps to join the union themselves.” said Tom Milani, a Table Games Supervisor.
